Directors Statement

We entered the mine first as outsiders, tourists, and left dfferent. What began as curiosity became responsibility.

The miners’ trust came slowly: a shared coca leaf, a bottle passed hand to hand. In those exchanges, we were given access not just to their workplace, but to their world.

Our intention was never to sensationalize suffering but to understand it. Minero seeks to preserve the dignity of its subjects, to show the humanity behind the dust, and to ask why, centuries after the Spanish conquest, men still crawl into the same mountain that has already taken so many lives.

Minero is an intimate documentary about life in the Cerro Rico mines of Potosí. One of the most storied and exploited mountains in human history. Through stunning cinematography and deeply personal interviews, the film reveals the enduring cycle that traps generations of Bolivian miners in pursuit of the silver that lies within the mines. Now almost entirely tainted after years of exploitation.

Inside the tunnels, miners pray to “El Tío,” a devil figure who is said to protect the miners once they pass through the dark cramped gates each day. The mine is a mixture of fear, devotion, and survival instinct that defines the rhythm of their days. The film sheds light on the collision between ancient tradition, modern poverty, and global demand.
